Map all instances of recurring task to an objective.

+1, still the case in 2026. I aligned a recurring series to an objective and chose to update all instances, but future instances didn't pick it up, so every instance has to be aligned by hand. i agree that i was also expecting to be able to assign a task to an objective and for repeating tasks to only have to do this once. Could an option be added - "Want to keep all instances of task aligned to objective?"
I can see as objectives are revisited each week then there are challenges when extending beyond the current week. However if I just had to align task to objective once for the week then that works. I don't mind repeating the activity each week as it forces a conscious choice as to whether the alignment still applies.

yes this is absolutely needed!

From Alex:
Thanks Hendy this is incredibly insightful. Your examples make a lot of sense, and I could see how this would be useful and save you some time.
I won't file this as a bug report, as it will get dismissed as we don't consider this a bug. However, I'll do it better and bring this up with my team this weekend so we can look at it.
I'm not sure we will decide to change this behavior, but it will at least have our attention going forward.
Thanks again for your time and help describing this.

Regarding objectives as I described above, this is VERY aligned with one of the most popular feature requests:
As you see, I'm not the only one doing it.
"Extending weekly objectives" is simply a workaround for Sunsama's current limitations. It doesn't yet match fully of how people want to organize their work.
And when you implement (hopefully!) true longer-term objectives, linking repeated tasks to the same objective will make even more sense, because the objective won't go away for many weeks or even months!

Hendy Irawan: Thanks Hendy, this would be very appreciated. Any update on this?

I'll describe my scenario and discussion with Alex Sunsama below:
_____________
Currently: Repeated tasks do not align with objective.
Only the first task is aligned with objective, the other "repeated clones" have the objective removed.
The current behavior is not correct. It should be fixed so that all repeated tasks is aligned with the objective (as long as the objective is still active/extended).

From Alex:
Hi Hendy,
Thanks for reporting this. This is actually not a bug but something working as designed, and in fact is something we "fixed" a couple of months ago. We changed it so that you could not align all instances of a recurring task to an objective, since recurring tasks repeat indefinitely and objectives do not.
May I ask more about your particular use case here, and why you want to be able to have all recurring tasks in a series align to an objective? Furthermore, what would you expect regarding a week where the objective is not extended through? If you aligned a recurring task to an objective, would you have only that week's instances align to the objective?
Let me know, so we can better consider Sunsama's handling of this.
Best,
Alex

A: If the objective is "gone", then the behavior would be similar to now.
"since recurring tasks repeat indefinitely and objectives do not."
Sunsama AFAIK currently doesn't have a way to "end recurring", but in practice, some of my "recurring" tasks do not repeat indefinitely. I just stop the recurring after finished.
I would say that some of the way that Sunsama works, is simply how it is currently implemented... but NOT a model of how people want to use it.
However, users learn to adapt to Sunsama's way of working and make workarounds.
Two examples:
- Repeated tasks do not support "end date" - as I describe above
- Objectives must be weekly, and user can "workaround" that by "extending" (so it can be two weeks, a month, even years hehe)
but changing those features will become feature request... but this isn't a feature request
So to make it inline as a "bug report", and not changing features.
- When user create or extend objectives, check the repeated tasks, if these objectives were aligned in the previous/base task, then they should be aligned as well
- A user can also change the repeated task in the middle of the repetition, then use "Update all uncompleted tasks" which will also update the aligned weekly objective going forward
A concrete example: (Personal)
Objective: Lower blood pressure
Repeated task: Light exercise (say, every 2 days)
That Objective may not be accomplished within 1 week, it may extend 2 or 8 weeks.
But by aligning those repeated tasks to that objective, it is easier to see/calculate how much effort has been spent for each of the objectives.
Above example is Personal context. Also useful for Work tasks
